I’m always on the lookout for great rainy day ideas or any kinds of activities that you can do when you need to stay at home. I live in Wales so it rains A LOT. Here I am going to show you one of our favourite activities -home made play dough.
Home made play dough is a great activity for most ages. There are a few methods I have seen used but we do the really easy basic no cook recipe. It is safe and non toxic so it was suitable to let my 1 year old have a play too.
You will need:
- 8 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp salt
- 60ml water
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Food colouring (optional)
Method
Add the flour and salt into a bowl and mix
In a separate container mix the water, oil and food colouring
Now add the water and oil mixture into the flour and salt mixture and work it through with a spoon
When most of it is bound together you can get your hands in to work it through
Our mixture was a little on the dry side so we added a little more water and oil mixture. If you’re dough is on the wet side you can add a little more flour until you get the right consistency
Knead the dough well. You will know when it is right as it will feel just like play dough. Now you can add more food colouring at this point if you want but remember it may make the dough a bit more sticky so you may need to add some more flour.
And voila there you have it. Home made play dough. Cheap and easy. It’s a great activity for my 6 year old as he can basically manage it on his own, under supervision, after I measured out the ingredients. The baby was not that impressed by it though.
(Yes I know I need to bleach my highchair straps back to white!) He basically decided it wasn’t tasty food and he threw it to the dog!
We didn’t add much food colouring this time but it can stain your hands if you use a lot (at least ours did previously). Now you are all set to make whatever creations you want. When you are done it can be stored in a tub or a freezer bag and placed in the fridge. If it becomes a bit stiff you can always add a bit more water and work it through the dough.
What we did last time we made shapes from the dough was we baked it in the oven. It was on gas mark 4 and for about 45mins although it will depend on oven and size of shape. When they are hard you can paint them. We haven’t painted ours yet
Hope you found this fun activity useful. Let me know in the comments if you would like me to try out any other activities.
Love and peace xx

I love homemade play dough. I’m a teacher so it’s a regular activity! I’ve done a mini blog on mum hacks and would like to do a full mum hack post with guest contributions. I would love to add a link to this and it would help your DA too, if you fancy adding mine back for a similar home made item to the bottom of your post? No worries if not. Let me know x
